BMW i8 CONCEPT
At the IAA 2011 shows BMW is providing a taste of his electric future. Which begins in 2013 when the two concept cars roll onto the market: The i3 Concept is decorated with the title of the BMW, according to "first premium electric car" and will conquer the hearts of city dwellers. The i8 is a dynamic concept sports car: with its plug-in hybrid concept, it combines an internal combustion engine with an electric drive. Both cars have no self-supporting body, but are designed for two independent units. Module integrates a chassis, power storage, drive and crash functions. Module two is the passenger compartment, which consists of very light and stiff carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.
This dichotomy is reflected in two concepts reflected in the appearance. Both parts are separated from each visible. Large, transparent surfaces allow light into the interior. There are flowing shapes and aerodynamic elements like torn edges or the so-called "AirCurtains" that will provide optimum airflow around the wheel arches. BMW emblem, kidney, sills and rear skirt are decorated with a bright blue. Also in the interior of this color is back. Apart from these similarities, they are based on two concepts, of course, their respective target groups.
With its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the BMW Concept i8 the modified electric drive of the BMW Concept i3 at the front with a 164 kW (224 hp) and 300 Nm strong three-cylinder high-performance internal combustion engine at the rear axle. Together they allow the two drive systems, playing off their respective talents and thus to provide the performance of a sports car, but with the consumption of a small car.
The one with the BMW i3 with the sympathetic Stupsschnauze short, compact, everyday companion. Short overhangs make parking maneuvers in tight spaces, the doors open in opposite directions, thus providing easy access to the interior. This is due to the large rear window opens separately. The rear diffuser is found in the sportier characteristic also i8 again. The special design of the i3, the interior is not divided by a central tunnel. This enables two continuous benches with two each. Other characteristic features are the detached steering column and instrument panel area. The i8 is, therefore, very sporty, flat and straight. As a 2 +2- seater, he even offers a degree of practicality. The doors open like wings upward. Headlights and taillights are - as it should be typical for the i-models - u-shaped. The cockpit is oriented towards the driver, but the affinity with the i3.
The electric motor develops 170 hp and the i3 has a torque of 250 Nm. So generously equipped, hums 3.80 meters long city car in 3.9 seconds from zero to 60th 100 km / h to be reached in 7.9 seconds. The force is on the stage-oriented gear to the rear wheels. Top speed of BMW targeting for i3 150 km / h. If the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal, the electric motor takes over the function of a generator, which feeds derived from the kinetic energy back into the vehicle battery. At the same time results in braking force, which - as BMW - leads to a "one-pedal feel", to say the feeling that you can control the car with only one pedal. Housed is the motor and power electronics and transmission with differential on the rear axle. Who wants to use the i3 as flexible as possible, which can draw on an optional range extender. The loading procedure of the socket should be six hours. Through a quick charge the battery is recharged after an hour to 80 percent. The energy storage unit is located in the subsoil.
Like the BMW Concept i3 is layering
the central design element for interior and exterior. The different
vehicle parts to be easily visible from the outside: the black and
Transparent Life held module sets it apart from the layer above,
silver-colored body panels. The layering gives the BMW Concept i8 an ultra-modern technical appearance.
The i3-drive is found in modified form at the front of the i8 again. At the rear, however, a turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine with 223 hp and 300 Nm of torque. This alliance can drive the march i8 in 4.6 seconds from zero to one hundredth At 250 km / h, electronically limited. The consumption should be at 2.7 liters. Up to 35 kilometers, the i8 also be driven purely electrically. In less than two hours, the energy storage may be recharged. The battery cells of the i8 sit in the middle of a tunnel-like structure, the so-called "energy keel." This strategy gives the i8 has a low center of gravity and axle load distribution of 50:50 - a true sports car is an important criterion.
